Garlic

Plant bulbs or cloves in October and November…

Varieties grown in Georgia are the Creole, Tahita, and Italian varieties. The Tahita variety produces the largest and mildest bulb.
Garlic is one of the easiest crops you can grow. October and November are the months to plant garlic bulbs or cloves.

Varieties grown in Georgia are the Creole, Tahita, and Italian varieties. The Tahita variety produces the largest and mildest bulb. The Italian is the smallest but the most pungent. Creole is intermediate in size and flavor.

Preparation is important…

Prepare the rows ahead of time, and apply three to four pounds of a complete fertilizer for each 100 feet of row. Plant garlic cloves six inches apart. Two or three pounds of garlic bulbs will plant 100 feet of row. Place the cloves in the ground with the base pointing downward-just like you do for onion sets. Plant them one to one and one-half inches deep.

Side dress in February or March…

In late February or early March, side dress garlic with about one pound of ammonium nitrate per 100 feet of row.

Garlic will be ready to harvest in May or early June as the tops begin to dry. With normal production, a home garden can yield a year's supply for the average family.
