Removing Stains Caused by Fruit Juices, Berries, Jam and Jellies

The most important rule to remember in treating stains caused by fruit or fruit juices is never to use soap. Soap will set the stain.

You should apply an enzyme pre-soak such as Biz to stained areas, or soak the stains in cold water. Next, you should work a detergent such as All or Wisk into the stain, then launder the garment, using the bleach recommended for the fabric.

If the stain is set…

You may need to sponge it with white vinegar, then work a detergent into the stained area before laundering.

For fabrics that can stand it…

Pour boiling water through the stain. You do this by placing the stained area over a bowl and holding the fabric in place with a rubber band. You still may see some discoloration. Treat by sponging with lemon juice or a three percent hydrogen peroxide solution. Again, launder the garment, using the right bleach for it.

The Georgia Cooperative Extension Service is not endorsing any products mentioned. There may be other products which will work equally well to remove stains. You may check labels or ask for such products where cleaning supplies are sold.
