A Necessity If You Live In A Flood Plain.
To determine your individual need for flood insurance, contact your building permit officer who will be able to tell you if your property lies in a flood prone area. If you don't know the name of your building permit officer, contact your city council or county commission office to help you.
If you're a homeowner in an area that's subject to flooding, you may need flood insurance. Many home owners discover too late that ordinary homeowners insurance does not cover damage from rising waters.
Water damage from flooding, rising surface waters, waves, sewers or drains, and from water seeping from below ground are specifically excluded from home owner policy coverage.
How Do You Cover Water Damage?
To cover rising water damage, properties must be covered by a special federal flood insurance program policy. You can get this type of coverage through any property and casualty agent or broker licensed to do business in Georgia. Home owners in many communities in Georgia are eligible to purchase flood insurance. Your local agent can tell you if your community is participating in this flood program.
If you're in a flood prone area…
You should seriously consider purchasing flood insurance. Insurance rates are based on the likelihood of your property being affected by flooding. The insurance covers both the property and its contents up to the limit of the policy that is purchased.
If you're considering the purchase of any property, be sure to investigate the flood proneness of the area where the property is located.
