THE ANIMAL SCIENCE PROGRAM at Fort Valley State University is designed to enhance human life and produce future leaders in animal agriculture by providing educational and experiential learning opportunities, to advance research programs that improve production efficiency and utility of animals, and to provide extension and outreach programs to disseminate research findings and introduce innovative value-added products to Georgians and the society at large.

GRADUATES of the Animal Science program will be well prepared to pursue higher studies in animal nutrition, physiology, molecular biology, food science and health sciences or gainfully employed in private or government agencies involved in production of food animals or processing, distribution and utilization of animal products.

APPROXIMATELY 120 SEMESTER CREDIT HOURS are required to complete the program, thirty-one of which are in animal science. These include molecular biology, basic and applied nutrition, animal genetics, animal physiology, animal ethology, research methodologies, food microbiology, meat science, food engineering, and food preservation.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS for the animal science program are acceptable high school grades and SAT or ACT score.

STARTING SALARIES for graduates with B.S. Degrees currently range from approximately $28,000 to $32,000 annually, with fringe benefits often adding significantly to total income.
